Bird Control: Don’t Wing It
Birds are smart. They enjoy a good view, a nice perch and a comfy nest. But they’re also a menace to businesses, tenants and customers. Pigeons, in addition to being infested with pests like fleas, ticks and lice, carry over 60 different types of diseases. Birds roost on building roofs, in eaves, on building overhangs, on solar panels, signage, HVAC units, supports and parapet walls. Their droppings on building ledges, patios, walkways and on other exterior venues create a dirty, disease-filled environment. Fixing the damage can be expensive.
Bird control is good for business.
HSG offers a variety of bird control options that maintain the appearance of your building but remove or discourage birds in a humane, permanent manner.
Types of bird control methods include:
Spikes – plastic or stainless steel, blunt-tipped spikes that provide an unfriendly environment for birds. Choice of material is based on level and type of infestation and budget.
Jolt Flat Track – this low voltage vinyl strip will mildly shock birds that land on it. Often used across tops of signs or along building edges. Can be solar powered or 120 volt.
Netting – usually used on larger, open spaces like open patios or roofs and depends on type of bird infestation
TightLine – spring-tensioned wire is installed on longer-length surfaces. When birds land on the TightLine, its uneven, springy surface makes it inhospitable to birds trying to perch.
Coil – stainless steel coils are typically installed on longer-length surfaces to deter larger birds like pigeons, gulls and crows. It is durable and relatively maintenance-free.
Bird Slide – the polycarbonate is installed to add a “slope” to an l-shaped ledge, making it virtually impossible for birds to land – and nest – on ledges and overhangs.
Barriers – solar panels, eaves and roof edges may need permanent bird barriers installed.
Repellent – sprayed on large areas, the repellent has a smell or taste that birds don’t like. Used once a week for a month, birds will ultimately leave the area alone.
In addition to prevention, HSG can humanely trap and relocate birds. HSG also offers window and exterior surface cleaning to repair damage and restore surface finishes.
What can building owners do to deter birds?
- Keep areas clean – birds thrive in dirty areas
- Remove any food remnants
- Don’t leave pet food out
- Discard trash, cage trash receptacles and keep trash receptacles closed
- Periodically inspect any bird proofing equipment to make sure it is operational and in good condition; replace any damaged barriers or deterrents immediately
